About the Item

Oil on panel depicting a magnificent still life, a work by the Valladolid artist Juan Antonio Morales. It displays the characteristic style of the genre, realistic and meticulous, which gradually gained prominence in the history of art. The great artist Caravaggio (1573-1610) was one of the first artists to represent still lifes with the awareness of them as works of art, but many others employed this technique at some point in their careers. With origins in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the still life gives the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscape or portraiture. Before 1700, they often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects they depicted. Also known as still lifes, they typically feature animals, flowers, fruits, food, plants, and so on. Their development is part of a growing appreciation for painting and an explosion of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century. The work, as is common in this genre, stands out for the simplicity of its composition. The background is neutral and dark, and the various elements are arranged on a canvas-covered surface. At the top, on a small pedestal, is a vase with a lush floral bouquet. In the foreground are a scallop shell and a small carving of the Virgin and Child. Juan Antonio Morales (Villavaquerín, Valladolid, 1909 – Madrid, 1984) Juan Antonio Morales was an artist from Valladolid, a painter, designer, and member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando from 1964 to 1984. He spent his childhood between Valladolid and Cuba. After returning from the island to complete his secondary education in the Castilian capital, he went back to Havana in 1927 to study medicine, but ultimately abandoned his studies to become a painter. In 1931, he presented his first exhibition at the Círculo Mercantil in Valladolid. Following the exhibition, he moved to Madrid to enroll at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he quickly became involved with the city's intellectual circles and befriended his classmate José Caballero, becoming a student of Daniel Vázquez Díaz. In 1934, he and José Caballero were commissioned to design the poster for Federico García Lorca's play Yerma. After the Spanish Civil War, he was imprisoned, but upon his release, he painted portraits of high society, including Francisco Franco. This work seems to have earned him admission to the San Fernando Academy in 1964 and, ten years later, to the Spanish Academy in Rome. His painting ranges from traditional beginnings, attributed primarily to his academic training, to the marked influence of José Caballero, which led him to Surrealism during the 1930s. In the following decade, he adopted a style much more closely linked to classical figuration, influenced by artists such as Benjamín Palencia and Luis Castellanos. Morales married Elena Blanco Argüello in Madrid and had one son, Ricardo, in New York.
