About the Item
Initialed lower right 'K.I.' for Kraesten Iversen (Danish, 1886 - 1955) and painted circa 1915.
Born in Copenhagen in 1886, Kraesten Iversen first studied with Hendrik Gronvold at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Art. An early member of the Bornholm School, he exhibited with success at the Charlottenborg Academy beginning in 1919. That same year, his large mythological work, 'Odysseus and Naussicaa' was purchased by the Société des Artistes Français for inclusion in their permanent collection.
In 1930, Iversen was appointed Professor of Art at the Copenhagen Academy and subsequently became an influential academic proponent of modernist ideas while continuing to exhibit widely throughout Europe. He worked in many different media, including ceramic and glass, and received numerous commissions to design stained-glass windows in both public and devotional buildings, including the city hall in Aarhus and Saint Nikolai's church in Svendborg. With the Bornholm School, he developed a distinctive style of classically-derived modernism, inspired by the island's unique landscapes and light. We are pleased to offer this dramatic and lyrical still-life, painted circa 1915, which exemplifies modernist ideals while remaining firmly anchored in the European classical tradition.

Spring Flowers
Paris, National Academy of Design, Chouinard, ASL, Laguna Beach
By Harold Frank
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
An exuberant Post-Impressionist still life of spring flowers shown informally arranged in a creamware vase against a variegated ivory background.
Signed Lower Right 'H. Frank' and painted circa 1975.
After initially studying in Paris, Harold Frank attended the New York Art Students League, the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, Chouinard Art Institute and UCLA where he was a colleague of Richard Diebenkorn, who had a lasting influence on his work. Other artists who deeply affected his creative philosophy included Matisse, Rouault, Picasso and De Kooning.
His one-man and group exhibition record is extensive and he was shown internationally in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Aubonne, Switzerland, as well as throughout the United States from the 1960's through the 80's. Though he did not seek recognition as his reason to create, major awards also came his way (among them the Adolph and Clara Obrig Award and the Sudam Silver Medal from the National Academy of Design; the National Watercolor Society's Grumbacher Award; the John Marin Memorial Award in the Watercolor U.S.A. Show and a First Prize from the Laguna Beach Museum of Art.
His subject matter included pure abstracts, landscapes, still lifes and the male and female head and figure. As many artists have done before and after him, he explored variations of each subject, experimenting with changes in medium, technique, light and color. His remarkable paintings of the female head and form quickly developed into a vehicle for his abstract interpretations. Though his brushwork is quick and sure, he often labored over several pieces at the same time.
This piece is accompanied with a first edition copy of 'Harold Frank: Abstract Expressionist 1921-1995' by Sandie Stern and published by Millenium Twelve Two (2001).

Still Life with Flowers - 20th Century Still Life Oil Painting, Flowers in Cup
By Stephen Bone
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Stephen Bone was a 20th-century landscape, mural and portrait painter.
He was born in London, the son of the artist and etcher Sir Muirhead Bone. The family lived in Italy between 1910 and 1912, before Stephen returned to attend Bedales School. He went on to study at the Slade School of Art, which now forms part of University College London, from 1922 to 1924 under Henry Tonks. Bone won a gold medal for wood engraving in the Paris International Exhibition the year after his graduation. The rest of 1925 was spent touring Spain with his father and travelling to France, Greece and Scandinavia. In 1929 he married his fellow artist, Mary Adshead, who had been a student with him at the Slade. In the early years of their marriage, the two travelled around Greece, Italy and the British Isles together.
An exhibition of Bone's work, alongside works from Robin Guthrie and Rodney Burn, was held at the London Goupil Gallery in 1926. In 1932 Bone became a member of the New English Art Club, having exhibited with them since around 1920. During the 1930s, he exhibited landscapes and portraits at the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society, the Lefevre Gallery, and the Redfern Gallery, including a solo exhibition in 1938. An exhibition at Ryman's Galleries, Oxford, in 1936 included oil paintings of forty-one British counties that Bone had created during his travels. During his time in Stockholm in 1936-37, Bone produced many works and had a number of exhibitions.
Though Bone is most recognised for his landscape paintings, he was also an illustrator, portraitist and mural painter. In 1925 his woodcuts illustrated the book 'Of the Western Isles...
