About the Item
These pieces were all part of the series Infinity Blooms a Kristin Jai Klosterman solo exhibition featuring abstract paintings and sculptures. In this latest body of work, Klosterman explores the appearance and eternal movement of spirals in the botanical world. Klosterman believes that everything in our world is interconnected; that we all contain patterns and these patterns also repeat themselves endlessly in nature. This body of work is inspired by the idea of the Golden Ratio, by the repetitive spiraling patterns that exist in our galaxies, the clouds that circulate over us, the prints of our fingers, and even the DNA in our cells.
Kristin Klosterman created her paintings with hand-drawn and painted silkscreens, which she used to print images in oil enamel on wood. The backgrounds are painted in oil and watercolor. The flowers are painted in colors not usually chosen to represent the botanical world. By changing the familiar tones of the blooms, Klosterman elevates them and brings attention to the patterns they share. Her sculptures are hand-painted in oil on one side, and covered in burnished metal on the other side; creating a relationship that suggests a flowing movement, an abstraction of the natural world. All which strips down nature to its very essence and reveals patterns we all share.
Kristin Jai Klosterman is an American sculptor and painter best known for her large-scale mobile sculptures cast in oxidized bronze. Early in the artist’s career, Klosterman apprenticed for renowned American artist Laddie John Dill - a central figure in the Light and Space Movement of the 1960s. Klosterman's body of work reflects the influences of artists Laddie John Dill, James Turrell, John McCracken, and Mary Corse in terms of its minimalism and also in the way the artist considers the impact of materials and scale on the environment and perception of her viewers. In her large-scale mobile sculptures, Klosterman utilizes the interactions between contrasting mediums as a vehicle for her examinations. Klosterman’s large-scale mobile sculptures are installed in both public and private spaces throughout the globe. In 2009, Klosterman collaborated with the socially conscious footwear giant, TOMS, to design an international campaign featuring her artwork.

Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes.
Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark.
