About the Item

A fine 19th century still life of flowers by French artist Louis Mettling (1847-1904). Mettling was born in Dijon, Côte- d'Or, France to English parents. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons, was a pupil under Alexandre Cabanel, and maintained studios in Neuilly-sur-Seine and also in Paris. He is primarily known for his oil paintings in the style of the old Dutch Masters including: portraits, landscapes, historical scenes, cityscapes, genre interiors, street children, and still lifes. He first exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1880, and later won two awards of honorable mention at the 1888 Salon and again at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 78 lower left, and housed in a fine molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 36.25 in H x 38.75 in W, actual; 43.38 in H x 28.75 in W x 1.5 in D. Ref: 8
