About the Item
David Marcus Robinson 1918-1999, was an Irish painter and sculptor who worked in an elementary and archaic manner. He was known as Markey Robinson, born in Northern Ireland, he initially trained at the Belfast School of Art, however he was somewhat elusive and used to disappear for lengths of time and it is thought he was at sea. A complete biography is readily available on the internet. However by the early 1940's he had established himself as a talented artist. This painting is oil on canvas textured board and depicts a common theme of Markey, still life incorporating lemons which he regularly painted in various forms and combinations usually with a fixture such as a vase or something similar. This picture looks to be a very early work as it is a conventional still life painting which maybe unfamiliar to general art enthusiasts that only see his later works as his banner of recognition, but as all artists start with a teacher who invariably teaches in the 'Salon type' manner it is a regular and pleasurable occurrence to see the other side of a painter's early efforts. David Marcus Robinson did changed his signature once he was established, his very early works were initialed DMR which then moved to some pictures being signed MR, he then moved to signing all his works 'Markey' which is a surrogate of Marcus. Pictures by Markey Robinson are widely collected by private individuals and institutions his popularity has gained momentum in the last 15 years with the recognition of his artistry in the increasing market prices. The picture is in the original frame and has been left as such for the authenticity of display.
