About the Item

This is a wonderful still life of lobster, fish, and mushrooms painted by the French-trained artist Martin Baer. The pleasing composition has all the traditional elements of an epicurean still life, but with the modern influence that is found in Baer's work. Completed in oil on canvas and in a period frame. The painting is dated 1934 and has several provenance inscriptions and a Parisienne address en verso. Martin Baer (January 3, 1894 -February 14, 1961) was born in Chicago, but spent the majority of his years living in Europe. Martin and his brother George (1893-1971) studied art at the AIC, in Munich and in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts. Following their art studies, the brothers spent two years on the outskirts of the Sahara Desert in North Africa, where they painted and lived. After Africa, Martin returned to Paris and had successful exhibitions. In the 1940s, with war approaching, he returned to the U.S. and soon had a studio-home on the Monterey Peninsula. The last 13 years of his life were spent in San Francisco, where he died at the age of 66. His exhibition record includes Galleries Durand-Ruel (Paris 1926), Art Institute of Chicago (1926), Gallerie Jeune Peinture (Paris 1928), Galerie de la Renaissance (Paris 1932), Gallery M. Benezit (Paris 1936), Newhouse Galleries (New York 1928, 1936, 1941) His last one-man show was held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco 1943). A retrospective entitled "A Memorial Exhibition of Paintings by Martin Baer" was held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (San Francisco 1963).
