About the Item

This work is a framed Japanese painting on colored washi by the artist Masaru Hirano. “Nandina in Snow” depicts clusters of bright red berries partially covered by soft white snow, creating a striking contrast that feels like a small warmth shining through a cold winter scene. The vivid red and fresh green leaves bring life to the composition, while the gentle depiction of snow conveys quiet weight and stillness. Hirano’s delicate brushwork captures both the chill of winter and the auspicious symbolism of nandina, blending coolness and warmth in a way that embodies the refined sensitivity of Japanese aesthetics. Elegant, detailed, and beautifully colored, this painting adds a serene and poetic presence to any space. Masaru Hirano was born in 1912 in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture. He was a member of the Seiryu Art Association, selected for its exhibitions fifteen times, and received one Encouragement Prize. He held six solo exhibitions and later led the Shinka Art Association. Known for his gentle style and refined flower and bird motifs, Hirano remains an admired figure in Japanese painting.
