"Faun and Fawn" Aaron Bohrod, Realist Still Life, Deer and Putti
Located in New York, NY
Aaron Bohrod Faun and Fawn, 1984 Signed lower right Oil on gesso board 16 x 12 inches Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery. Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life, which comprised most of Bohrod's early work. Under Sloan's tutelage, Bohrod came to subscribe to the belief that painters should find the subjects of their art in the immediate world around them. These paintings emphasized architecture unique to north Chicago and featured Chicagoans engaged in such everyday activities as working, playing or going to the theatre. The romantic aspect was conveyed by the use of misty colors, and the realism by attention to detail. In 1936, Bohrod won the Guggenheim Fellowship award in creative painting...

John Hatch American Cubist Landscape Oil Painting Massachusetts Seascape 1952
Located in Buffalo, NY
An original oil on board painting by American modernist John W. Hatch. This incredible cubist landscape was created in 1952. Estate stamped and dated on the reverse. Titled, "Nahant Rocks, Lynn, MA " with a partial exhibition label on the reverse. The painting comes housed in a black wood frame presentation. John Woodsum Hatch 1919-1998 During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved. Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH. Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist. Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78. Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...

An Exceptional Two-Tiered Fruit Still Life Oil Painting, by Mary Mellen, C. 1850
Located in Queens, NY
Mary Blood Mellen (American Female Artist, 1819-1882) A Large and Exceptional Two-Tiered Fruit Still Life Oil on Canvas Painting, circa 1850 Signed lower right: Mellen Inscribed possibly by the artist's hand on the stretcher bar: To be sent to Sowle Ward's for Miss C. A. Rice This sumptuous two-tier display of fruit and elegant glassware is the largest and most ambitious still-life painting known to have been produced by Mary Blood Mellen (1819-1882), an American Female artist best known for her luminous marines strongly indebted to the style of Fitz Henry Lane. Indeed, still lifes from her hand are extremely rare. The present work is very close to the style of still life popularized by the Prussian-American artist Severin Roesen (1805-1882) who specialized in the genre during the middle decades of the nineteenth century and is signed as Roesen sometimes signed his own efforts, at lower right, as a curly trompe-l'oeil grape tendril, which reads in this case "Mellen." Until quite recently, Mary Blood Mellen was described in histories of American art exclusively as a copyist, notably of Lane. But as more research into her life and work has been undertaken, that picture of her achievement has been substantially revised and refined. Mellen was, in fact, Lane's pupil, and a copyist of his work. But owing to the skill she developed working with him in his Gloucester studio, Mellen evolved into an artist in her own right, working alongside him as a sometimes collaborator on the same pictures-their work often being so similar that it is frequently difficult to tell it apart. Mellen and Lane also formed a fast friendship. She also painted ravishing moonlit marine compositions of her own invention, as well as nostalgic New England landscapes in her own style. At a 2007 scholarly conference held at Spanierman Galleries in New York in conjunction with the exhibition, "Fitz Henry Lane and Mary Blood Mellen: Old Mysteries and New Discoveries" held at the Cape Ann Historical Museum, there was a small footnote to the effect that Mellen was also known to have copied works by other artists, including Alfred Bricher and Severin Roesen (See Report on Scholars' Gathering in Association with the Exhibition "Fitz Henry Lane Mary Blood Mellen: Old Mysteries and New Discoveries," 2007, p. 5.) How she encountered works by those figures, particularly Roesen who was active primarily in New York City and eastern and central Pennsylvania, remains speculative. Certainly, copying other artists' work was an aspect of nearly every artist's training at the time Mellen was active as a painter. Mellen was born in Vermont in 1819 to parents who were originally from Massachusetts. She was educated at the Quaker's Fryville Seminary in Bolton, Massachusetts, where she would have learned artistic crafts including theorem painting...

1925 Viennese Oil Painting Interior Still Life with Porcelain Vase, Tapestry Rug
Located in Surfside, FL
Framed 21.2 X 25.5 Unframed 17 X 21 Signed and dated 1920. Nina Karasek (Joële) born 1883 Kuttenberg, Czech Lands, Austro-Hungarian Empire, died in 1952 (I have also seen the date recorded as 1933) Vienna, Austria. Nina Karasek was an Austrian Impressionist & Modern artist who was born in 1883. Her work was featured in exhibitions at the Es Baluard, Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art and the Bildraum Bodensee. Little is known of Nina Karasek's life. She was born in 1883 in Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) in Bohemia, studied art at the Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen (Art School for Women and Girls) in Vienna, Austria, under Adalbert Seligmann and Tina Blau. She studied at the Frauenakademie in Vienna and Munich. In the 1920's she worked first as a landscape painter and an illustrator, later turning toward symbolism, painting mystical subjects after her interest in spiritualism. Her conventional works were shown at various exhibitions. At the age of 44, while she was copying a work by Rembrandt in an Italian museum, she fell into an altered state of consciousness. Rembrandt appeared to her, took possession of her arm, and immediately her hand started to draw something quite different from what she had intended. From then on, for the rest of her life Nina Karasek was in “supernatural” contact with a series of great masters like Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer, Goya, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Gustav Klimt and others. Under their guidance and inspiration, she drew and painted works "in the style" of the masters. But very soon her works became stylistically more and more unrestricted and Symbolist, showing an enormous range of creative expression, ranging from symbolic and allegorical motifs to bewildering images with a fantastic arsenal of figures and private characters, signs, and symbols, and to frantic, gestural sketches and abstract compositions. From then on, she often signed her works with her esoteric “primordial name” Joële. (Nina Karasik-Joel) Almost everything we know about her life was from what she noted on the reverse of her drawings: sometimes diary-like notes of her horrible living conditions during World War II, but often strangely impenetrable explanations of the depicted motifs – often as fascinating and mysterious as the drawings themselves. In her works and notes, an exciting private cosmology and mythology unfolds, a drama of hidden powers and principles that flow through macrocosm as well as microcosm. Shortly after their discovery, Nina Karasek's Spiritualist, mediumistic works have found their way into galleries and major international collections. Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham in 1853, the son of the flower artist George Clare (1839-1890) and his wife Elizabeth Bowen. His brother Vincent Clare (1856-1917) also became an artist and both would have received tuition from their father who influenced their style and subject matter. At the age of 18 he enlisted as a soldier in the Kings Own regiment, but gave this up to become a full time artist. Like his father, Clare specialised in still life paintings, containing fruit and garden flowers, often on mossy banks. Sometime after 1871, he moved to London where he married Emma Mary Webb...
