About the Item

A charming oil painting on canvas depicting a colorful floral still life in a blue vase on top of a wood table. The flowers depicted are a bright bunch of tulips, placed effortlessly. The piece is done in a highly impressionistic manner and is a wonderful display of Williams more impressionistic styles, with bold colors of joyful yellow, deep rouge, and softer colors of light blue, hints of brown, and pops of pink. This painting is signed lower right and comes housed in a gold-toned wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 24 x 20 inches Frame measures 29 x 25.5 inches Mildred Emerson Williams was born in Detroit, Michigan and was a fine American painter and lithographer. She first studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Art Student League of New York under Robert Henri, John Sloan, George Luks and Mahonri Young. She later conducted her studies in Paris in the late 20's. During her career, Mildred Williams produced many fine lithographs depicting views in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and France. Most were printed in unnumbered editions but it is known that many of her fine prints were published in editions of thirty impressions or less. Mildred Williams was a full member of the Society of Independent Artists, Artist Equity Association and the Michigan Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. During her exhibiting career, she received awards from the Detroit Institute of Art (1928, 1934, 1939 and 1940) and from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1928). Her paintings and lithographs were also exhibited at such institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery and the Carnegie Institute. Today examples of her art are included in the collections of the New York Public Library, Palmer Museuni of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Detroit Institute of Art.
