Nafir Boaba’s Cactus is a vivid example of his modern-naïve approach to still life, executed in oil on canvas in 1982. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the lower right: “BOABA NAFIR 82 / CACTUS,” the work measures 24 x 18 1/8 inches (61 x 46 cm). The composition features a horizontally layered background in blues and purples, contrasted with simplified, abstracted forms at the bottom—playfully suggestive, with shapes reminiscent of the human form—demonstrating Boaba’s signature balance of whimsy and sophistication.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, with his work shown in some sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop still house a vast collection of his creations.
Boaba’s style is resolutely modern yet rooted in naïve and outsider traditions, characterized by bold colour planes, flattened forms, and a playful abstraction that conveys emotion and personality with clarity and directness. Cactus, from the artist’s estate, exemplifies this approach: a minimalist yet dynamic composition that transforms everyday motifs into a striking visual statement.
