Nafir Boaba’s Flori Din Spania is a vibrant and whimsical still life, executed in oil on canvas in 1982. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the lower right: “BOABA NAFIR 82 / FLORI DIN SPANIA,” the painting measures 24 x 15 inches (61 x 38 cm). The work features stylized flowers rendered with simplified, flattened forms, set against a soft lilac background. Boaba’s signature use of bold, unmodulated colour and naïve, almost childlike abstraction imbues the piece with both charm and modernist sophistication.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, and exhibited in some sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to house his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s style is resolutely modern yet deeply rooted in naïve and outsider traditions, combining bold color planes, flattened perspectives, and a playful abstraction that conveys emotion with clarity and directness. Flori Din Spania, from the artist’s estate, is an exemplary demonstration of his imaginative vision and distinctive approach to still life.
