Nafir Boaba’s Fructe is a richly textured and expressive still life, executed in oil on canvas in 1984. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the lower right “FRUCTE BOABA NAFIR 84,” the painting measures 18 x 24 inches (45.8 x 61 cm). The composition depicts fruit arranged on a table, rendered through a boldly abstracted lens. Dominated by deep maroons, soft light blues, and areas of white, the surface is constructed almost like a collage, with flattened shapes and layered colour planes that emphasize rhythm and balance over naturalistic detail.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he worked continuously until 2006. Over the course of his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, and exhibited in approximately sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to preserve and present his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s visual language is distinctly modern while remaining deeply connected to naïve and outsider traditions. His use of bold, unmodulated colour, flattened perspective, and playful abstraction conveys emotion with immediacy and clarity. Fructe, from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his inventive approach to still life, transforming a familiar subject into a vibrant exploration of form, colour, and compositional harmony.
