About the Item
This contemporary abstract expressionist still life painting, depicting a terracotta pot filled with summer flowers, was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot.
It forms part of her ongoing series dedicated to still life floral compositions, titled "Sweet Smell of Summer."
In this vibrant and expressive piece, Natalya captures the warmth and vitality of the summer season through bold brushstrokes and a striking color palette dominated by rich reds and deep greens. The dynamic composition reflects her emotional connection to nature and her commitment to painting from a place of sincerity and instinct.
“Still life painting has always felt like a quiet space for me.
A way to slow down and really look at simple, everyday things—flowers in a vase, the way light falls across a table.”
For Natalya, still life is never just about depicting objects—it's about exploring the emotions they evoke. This artwork exemplifies her intuitive process and her deep appreciation for art history and artistic lineage.
“I’m drawn to these subjects because they give me room to explore emotion through color and movement. It’s never just about the objects—it’s about the feeling they carry.”
“With this piece, I was especially inspired by Matisse, Van Gogh, Cézanne—their fearless use of color and the beauty of their artistic heritage. I wanted the scene to feel alive and full of energy from the very first glance. I let bold reds and deep greens take the lead, trusting them to tell the story.”
Natalya’s painting practice is grounded in authenticity. She paints not for trends or markets, but from an honest place of personal truth.
“For me, painting is not about decoration—it’s about connection.
Each brushstroke reflects something I felt in the moment. It’s my way of being honest—of turning what I see and what I feel into something others might also connect with.”
“I don’t paint for trends or markets. I paint what feels true to me. And I always hope my work finds someone who feels that truth too.”

About the Artist:
Originally from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, and now based in Lyon, France, Natalya Mougenot has spent over two decades refining her artistic voice. Her multicultural background and personal experiences deeply inform her bold, emotionally charged works, which are held in private collections around the world.
Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut, creating works that are raw, intuitive, and deeply human. Her guiding values—authenticity, sincerity, and honesty—are present in every piece she creates.
“Authenticity is everything.
People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not.
I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.”
In addition to painting, Natalya is a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also showcased on this platform—reflects the same poetic, observational spirit as her paintings. Whether capturing quiet urban corners or natural light on an object, her photography serves both as standalone art and as inspiration for future canvases.

Natalya is a contemporary artist from Lyon, France. She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes and low mountains. She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country. She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis when she was struggling with radical life changes. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now. Several years ago painting became more than a hobby. It became a way of expressing her emotions and visions, a successive reaction to events of either personal or general concern. Her artist statement: “ I paint as it’s a necessity for my soul to express itself. Being creative for me is overcoming the restrictions. My art is a piece of my soul. I hope my art inspires reflection, provides a release and forms connection at other people’s souls”. She has developed her own vision of art through practicing a lot. She makes use of varying degrees of figuration, abstraction and impressionism by adding a contemporary twist. Abstract art for her is an interesting challenge for understanding inner feelings, a self-expression based on an intuitive approach. In figurative art her main subject remains women. Her artworks representing women contain the raw emotions of women. She also communicates the importance and the power of strong female relationships: “Women are enriched when they bond with each other”. She works in series: among them are "Heart-mind connection" of abstract artworks, "Women", "Bond", "Florals", "Springtime"... She uses various mediums ( acrylic, oil, watercolor, oil pastels) to create her unique artworks either on canvas or on paper. But she mainly uses acrylic as she works very quickly and expressively by finishing her artwork in one sitting. If Natalya had to pick one quote about her art, she would say : " Art is the reflection of the soul". Natalya goes with her gut and intuition to choose the colors, the lines, the shapes and the texture. She hopes her artworks will give a home a unique personality by filling it with life and color. Her sources of inspirations are Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse, George-Daniel de Monfreid, Paul Gauguin. She also admires the artworks of Joan Mitchell and Banksy.
