About the Item
A lyrical floral still life by Russian-American painter Nicolai S. Cikovsky (1894–1984), a key figure in the early 20th-century American Scene and Social Realist movements. In this intimate composition, Cikovsky turns to a domestic subject with painterly sensitivity, depicting a spontaneous bouquet in a blue ceramic pitcher against a dark, near-monochrome backdrop.
Rendered in heavy impasto and expressive brushwork, the painting reflects his later stylistic shift toward a more modernist idiom—loosely structured, color-driven, and concerned with surface and abstraction as much as representation. The palette is restrained but elegant, with delicate pinks, creams, and reds punctuating the cool greens and blues.
Cikovsky exhibited widely, including with the Whitney Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was a member of the Associated American Artists and a longtime participant in the Woodstock and East Hampton art scenes.
