About the Item

“Camellia” by Numata Yasuhiro is a serene Nihonga painting capturing the moment when winter gives way to spring. A single red camellia bud glows softly against branches still dusted with snow, its warmth rising gently from a muted, mist-toned background. Through refined mineral pigments and delicate gradations, Numata evokes the quiet tension between cold and renewal, creating a scene filled with purity, calm, and quiet resilience. The composition is minimal yet deeply expressive. The camellia stands as a symbol of endurance and quiet hope, appearing almost luminous against the cool atmosphere. Numata’s mastery of softness, transparency, and seasonal nuance reflects the poetic sensibility that defines his best work. Born in Kyoto, Numata graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts in 1956 and later studied under Ikeda Yoson. He received the Governor’s Award at the Seitosha Exhibition (1961) and was selected for the Kyoto Prefecture New Japanese Painting Exhibition (1962), where his work was acquired for the prefectural collection. Throughout the 1960s–80s he earned major honors at the Kansai Art Exhibition, Osaka Grand Art Exhibition, and exhibited frequently at Nitten, becoming an Associate Member in 1986. Known for lyrical depictions of nature, animals, and seasonal transitions, Numata remains a respected figure in contemporary Nihonga.
