About the Item

Penny Whent (American, born 1949) "Fruit Bowl" 2005 Acrylic Paint, Canvas Board The artist signed the bottom left of the painting. Framed: 29" x 33" x 1.25" “Fruit Bowl” by Penny Whent reimagines the classic still life through a bold contemporary lens infused with abstraction. Vivid shades of magenta, violet, and gold form stylized fruit outlined in dynamic black contours, set against a background of muted gray and burnished brass tones. The interplay of bright color and earthy grounding creates both harmony and contrast, lending the piece a modern, graphic energy. Striking and playful, this work highlights Whent’s ability to merge everyday subjects with expressive, abstract design. About the Artist: Penny’s artistic journey began in childhood, influenced by her architect‑photographer father in Pacific Grove. Penny is largely self-taught, having explored block printing, watercolor, photography, and drawing before embracing painting. Her art, once a part‑time practice during her years as a paralegal, now flourishes full‑time in her Monterey home studio. Penny translates the landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra Nevada foothills into post and abstract impressionist canvases that glow with emotive color and expressive still lifes. Her work has been featured in numerous galleries throughout the Monterey Bay area, including Carmel, Pacific Grove, and Big Sur.
