About the Item

Early 20th century Still Life with Fruits is by Reginald Bathurst Birch (1856-1943). Birch is best known as the famous illustrator of Frances Hodgeson Burnett's book 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', published in 1886, but Birch was also a fine artist of his time. This oil on canvas painting of fruits in a wooden basket is signed by the artist, and dated 1912. Birch is known as an illustrator, having illustrated some 60 books including popular children's books, but he was also a fine artist. His work demonstrated accomplished painting in portraits and landscapes, as well as this still life example. Born and educated in Britain, Birch moved to New York to work as an illustrator for magazines such as Harpers and Life. In New York he became a founding member of the Society of Illustrators. After his success with Little Lord Fauntleroy he flourished, painting and illustrating, including illustrating more books by Burnett. He illustrated forty books until 1914 and the beginning of World War I. This work in 1912, was in the period he flourished as an artist and illustrator. It was only in 1933 that he began full time work again, gaining new fame with Louis Untermeyer's 'The Last Pirate'. Still Life with Fruits was painted in his prime years, and is a lovely study in 19th century style with darkened background that highlights the brighter color of grapes, peaches and pineapples. Presented in wooden gilt frame, Still Life with Fruit, is ready to hang on your wall to enjoy. Provenance runs with the famous illustrator and artist, adding interest to a well known genre of still life art. This painting is 21" by 34" in the frame, and the canvas is 14" by 28". Minor imperfections of this vintage painting do not detract from the work as a whole.
