About the Item
Valnere Rita
1929 - 2015
Rita Valnere was born on September 21, 1929, was a Latvian painter and art teacher.
In 1949, she graduated from the Janis Rozentals Riga Art Secondary School. In 1956, she graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts. From 1967 to 2000, she also taught there, from 1985 — professor. From 1988 — corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts.
In 1955, she began to participate in exhibitions. She painted most often in oil and pastel techniques, painted many portraits, in 1962 she also created “Self-Portrait with Ieva”, in 1974 she painted a portrait of Rainis and Aspazija. Author of altarpieces for several churches (including the Riga Church of Saints Peter and Paul), also worked in book art.
In 1957, she became a member of the Latvian Artists' Union. In 1978, she received the Latvian Artists' Union Award, in 1988 — the honorary title of People's Artist of the Latvian SSR. In 2002, the artist was awarded a lifetime scholarship from the State Cultural Capital Fund.
