Roger MASSON was born on October 16, 1890 in Doulaincourt in Haute-Marne, France. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon and exhibited at the salons in Paris, Reims and Nancy. Roger Masson painted in the 1920s-40s landscapes, often with water (banks of the Marne, Arcachon basin, Italian coast). But as a journalist wrote in the newspaper La Croix de la Haute-Marne, Roger Masson “specializes in still lifes, fruits and flowers, copper too. He has a very pronounced sense of hues for copper household utensils. All of his works reflect an undeniable talent recognized elsewhere by various awards given at fairs and exhibitions. "
Our painting is dated 1927. It shows the qualities of a colorist painter who knows how to play with the material to create a very harmonious composition where the flowers respond to familiar objects: in this painting the transparent vase and the book are as beautiful as the flowers !
Several of his paintings are in the museum of Saint-Dizier (Haute-Marne) ("Doulaincourt under the snow", "Zinnias, autumn flowers", "Lilacs from my garden" and "The Kidney at Donjeux, landscape in autumn").

Georges Paul Masure was a Parisian painter in the Montparnasse area. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in the years 1900/1910.
Our painting is the painting he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 under the number 2032 and titled "Flowers and Japaneries". It represents a still life with a bunch of flowers, a magnificent basket of oranges, a pomegranate and a Japanese sculpture with a little fisherman with a red Koi carp. 2500 years ago, when the son of Confucius was born, he received as a gift from King Shoko of Ro, a fish that was first called Koi. It represents the symbol of strength, because this fish was the only one able to go up the steam of the Yellow River. Owning a koi will long remain the prerogative of the Japanese nobility.
