Roy Hodrien, born in Lancashire in May 1957, discovered his passion for painting during his time at Oldershaw Grammar School. Encouraged by the support he received, he pursued an art foundation course at a local art school before advancing to further studies in Coventry.
Early in his career, Hodrien developed a strong interest in animal painting, completing numerous private commissions. This phase culminated in the publication of his book, Pedigree Dogs in Colour, which featured over 100 of his illustrations accompanied by his own written text.
Subsequently, after a period working in advertising, Hodrien shifted his focus to still life painting. He draws significant inspiration from the 17th-century Dutch Masters, particularly Willem Kalf and Jan Davidsz de Heem. His meticulous technique involves layering thin glazes of paint to achieve a luminous, translucent effect, while his highlights are rendered with thick, undiluted paint. Through this approach, Hodrien strives to capture the richness and precision of the Old Masters while maintaining a distinct, personal style.
Hodrien’s works are featured in collections worldwide, including the U.S., Belgium, Germany, the Middle East, and the Far East. He has also exhibited in London, earning him international recognition.
