About the Item

A wonderful little abstract gem by Sarkis Sarkisian entitled Still Life with Cream Pitcher. It is a vibrant and beautiful example of mid-century modern abstraction. Framed in a thin gold gallery frame, the painting has an artist-painted border in a shade of pale mauve. This painting was a part of the artist's estate, and the provenance is detailed enverso. It is unsigned, but has a note of authentication from his daughter. Sarkis Sarkisian emigrated to Detroit with his Armenian family from Smyrna, Turkey in 1922. He showed early artistic talent and studied under John Wicker and at the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts under John Carroll. As a teacher, "Sarkisian spelled out his own philosophy of painting: 'The only way to be an artist is to know you have to train yourself. Otherwise, all you can do is imitate. Experience should come first. Then influence can be absorbed intelligently. Sure, Picasso based his Blue Period on El Greco. But Picasso translated what he picked up into his own way of thinking. That's why he's an innovator, not an imitator.' " (Detroit News) Sarkis was juried into art exhibitions across the nation during his lifetime including the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Annual Exhibitions of American Painters and Sculptors at the Art Institute of Chicago*, First Annual Show of Contemporary Art at the Richmond Museum of Art, Society of Independent Artists, Paintings from 16 American Cities at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Scarab Club* of Detroit, Biennial Exhibition of American Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Biennial Exhibitions of American Oil Paintings at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., National Exhibition of American Art at Rockefeller Center in New York, Annual Exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among many others. Richard Jerzy Watercolor "Red Chair" Interior with Flowers Chair
By Richard Jerzy
Located in Detroit, MI
"Red Chair," though an interior scene, is arranged like a still-life with the furniture and objects slightly off-kilter in the creative manner of Marc Chagall's interiors, the Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. These non-fixed objects lend a floating energetic atmosphere and the brilliant colors contribute to the liveliness of this warm inviting interior. Richard Jerzy was a well-known watercolor artist from the Detroit, Michigan area. His signature works were figures and still lives, and many famous Michigan families are collectors. "He was probably the most promising, successful, exciting artist in the state of Michigan," said Miriam Parel, a fellow artist and friend for more than 30 years. He grew up on Detroit's east side and developed an interest in painting as a teenager. He attended Detroit's Center (now College) for Creative Studies. Other well- known CCS faculty and graduates are Susan Aaron-Taylor, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing, Stephen Dinehart, Tyree Guyton...
