This painting was purchased from a museum auction in South Haven, Michigan, sometime in the last 30 years.
The Spanish-American War (1898) was a brief conflict where the U.S. fought Spain, ending Spain's colonial rule in the Americas and resulting in the U.S. acquiring Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, marking America's rise as a world power. Its causes included American support for Cuba's independence, sensationalized "yellow journalism" fanning public outrage over Spanish actions, and the mysterious explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, which many blamed on Spain, leading to a U.S. declaration of war.
