About the Item
Vincent Clare (British, 1855–1930)
Still Life of Fruit on a Mossy Bank
Oil on canvas, signed lower right
Circa 1870
Presented in a richly carved and gilded 19th-century style frame
This jewel-like still life by Vincent Clare, one of the most refined members of the celebrated Clare painting dynasty, captures a quiet moment of natural abundance. Arranged on a mossy bank with careful asymmetry, a cluster of black and golden grapes is nestled beside ripe red strawberries, their surfaces catching subtle light beneath a deep woodland palette. The composition is intimate, yet rich in texture and tonal nuance—Clare’s signature touch rendered in minute brushstrokes that evoke the soft bloom of the fruit and the delicate intricacy of the moss.
The son of George Clare and brother of Oliver Clare, Vincent inherited a tradition rooted in the Dutch still life, but with a distinctly English sentimentality. His works, often smaller in scale, are marked by a poetic stillness and meticulous observation of nature. Here, his restrained use of colour and sensitive treatment of light result in a painting that is both decorative and contemplative—recalling the Victorian fascination with transience, ripeness, and decay.
Executed circa 1870, this example is housed in a highly ornate gilt frame of the period, which enhances the jewel-like quality of the painting and lends it the stature of a cabinet picture. An exemplary piece of Victorian still life, it would appeal to collectors of British naturalist painting or those seeking an elegant accent of 19th-century refinement.

Vincent Clare
Vincent Clare was a painter of fruit and flower subjects. He was born on December 13, 1855, in Birmingham. He was the son of George Clare and brother of Oliver Clare, who were also painters. Clare lived for most of his life in Southgate, London, although he was known to have exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool between 1888 and 1897. Of all the still life subjects Clare painted, his flower compositions are recognized as his strong point. Clare died in London in 1925.

19th century English oil of still life of fruit, German Stein with silver lid
By CHARLES THOMAS BALE
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English 19th century still life of fruit, a German Stein with silver top in an interior.
Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game. Bale’s work was influenced by the English still-life artists George Lance and William Duffield...
