Walter Blackman (1847–1928)
Apple Blossom in a Vase

Oil on canvas applied to board

Walter Blackman was born in New York in 1847 and pursued formal study in Paris under the celebrated academic master Jean-Léon Gérôme. His career unfolded at a moment when American painters sought validation abroad, absorbing the rigor of European academies while shaping a distinctly American sensibility. Blackman’s oeuvre spans figure studies, landscapes, marine views, and genre scenes, but his still lifes stand out for their intimacy and tonal restraint.
The present work—a delicate bouquet of white flowers arranged in a clear glass vase—demonstrates Blackman’s command of subtle color harmonies and atmospheric depth. The muted brown background and dark tabletop provide a stage for the blossoms, whose crisp petals glow against the shadowed ground. The ornate gilt frame underscores the painting’s classical refinement, situating it within the late 19th-century taste for richly presented cabinet pictures.
Walter Blackman’s still lifes are relatively rare, making this example an important testament to his versatility. It bridges the academic rigor of Gérôme’s atelier with the intimate naturalism of American floral painting. There are many similarities to Martin Johnson Heade still-lifes in this painting. An auction high for another rare still-life by Walter Blackman brought around $10,000.00 at auction

Walter Blackman
Walter Blackman was born in New York in 1847 and died December 13, l928 in Chicago, Illinois. He received his formal training under the hand of Jean-Leon Gerome. Walter Blackman was drawn to Paris's three ateliers that were established at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1863, under the direction, respectively, of Gerome Cabanel and Isidore Pils (1813-1875). It was Gerome who was most popular among American painters. His consistency of rigorous academic style and durability as a teacher made him a significant resource for dozens of American students; Thomas Eakins, Fredric Arthur Bridgeman, Edwin Lord Weeks, Kenyon Cox, Julius L. Stewart, Mary Cassat and Walter Blackman. Although Gerome heavily influenced Walter Blackman's style, Alexander Cabanel also influenced him. Walter Blackman's friend, Thomas Hovenden, was studying at the Beaux-Arts studio under Cabanel in 1874-75. It was through this friendship that Blackman became acquainted with Cabanel's techniques. It was the combination of Gerome's journalistic, humanizing approach and Cabanel's more melodramatic style that molded Blackman's final approach to his own painting. Walter Blackman became a member of the Association of American Artists in Paris. Beginning in the 1860's independent studios began to become appealing. Groups of students, like Blackman, began seeking alternatives to continued emphasis on draftsmanship and on classical tradition. They organized two studios, in which Bonnat and Carolus-Duran were visiting critics. These artists also exhibited together and it is recorded that Walter Blackman exhibited "Caught in the Act" in the 1878 exhibit. Before these French exhibitions, Walter Blackman had returned to New York to embark on a career as a painter and poet. Blackman worked extremely hard exhibiting at the National Academy between 1868-1878. Like many other artists during this period, Blackman found it difficult to establish himself in New York. He left New York for London after exhibiting two paintings at the National Academy "Game of Quibbles" Lot #286 and "Signal" Lot #449. Upon his arrival in London, he received an invitation to exhibit at the Royal Academy. Exhibition records in London note that he was actively exhibiting between 1878 and 1895.

Still life Flowers in a Vase
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Still Life Flowers in a Vase" c.1960 is an oil painting on canvas by noted California artist John William Orth, 1889-1976. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The canvas size is 36 x 30 inches, framed size is 46.5 x 40.5 inches. Custom framed in a wooden gold with brown patina frame, with fabric and gold liner. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
John W. Orth was born in Bavaria in 1889. He sold his first painting, a water color, when he was 13. At age 15 studied under a scholarship at Nuremberg's College of Fine Arts. Three years later, again on a scholarship, he attended Munich's Academy of Fine Arts. From there he went on to study at the Art Academy Julien in Paris and then traveled throughout Europe, studying work by the Old Masters.
For Nuremberg's Albrecht Durer Museum, he was commissioned to reproduce a number of Durer's paintings, and representatives of The Rhineland's Barmen Museum purchased his painting of The Prodigal Son. In 1922, Louis Mayer, an accomplished artist himself, purchased Orth's The Prophet from among thousands of paintings displayed at Munich's Glas Palast. He declared Orth's painting "the work of a genius," and for three years The Prophet was hung, by invitation, in the Brooklyn Art Museum.
Already an established artist at age 34, Orth left his troubled country in 1923 to escape certain persecution for his outspoken liberal views on race, religion and politics. He came to America to start anew. Here, he felt certain, his restless spirit could continue to grow, his career to flourish in an environment of freedom, which encouraged individual expression and unrestrained thought.
In the United States, John Orth did portraits of notables including Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Marian Anderson...
