Rare still life painting by listed California artist William Franklin Jackson.
A remarkable still life with grapes on a table with a vase.
Original oil on board. Dimensions 23" x 19". The period frame measures 32" x 28".
The painting is signed in the lower right corner.
The frame is lightly distressed (consistent with age).
William Franklin Jackson was an accomplished California artist known for his painted views of poppy fields. Jackson was born in 1850 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and at the age of twelve he and his family headed west to California.
Jackson lived in San Francisco, California, and attended the California School of Design studying under Virgil Williams. Later in his career he took many painting trips to the American River and the Sierra Nevada Mountains with painter friend William Keith.
This is a fine opportunity to acquire an original painting by this talented American artist.

Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game.
