About the Item
Zane York coaxes and cajoles with a bit of humor which belies a deeper sensitivity. His eye-catching subjects never fail to cause a double-take. In our age of nearly constant visual stimuli and sensationalism, York musters astonishment, fascination and draws us deeper to notice subtleties which appear hidden to the glance but fully revealed to those who really see. York’s finely detailed renderings take deliberate liberties with reality by magnifying the everyday —a cat, a flower, an insect, dentures— and in the process, convince us that his quirky and bizarre juxtapositions are invitations to lose oneself in the infiniteness of the human condition. York’s aesthetic rigor shows the possibilities of a new perspective and paves a way for greater freedom.

Zane York
Zane York was born in Fremont, Nebraska and was raised all over the Midwest. From an artistic family, he began drawing at an early age; his focus and passion quickly became evident. He spent hours drawing and learning anatomy in pursuit of illustrating comic books — a goal wisely abandoned. York received his B.F.A. in drawing, painting and sculpture from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and his M.F.A. in painting from the New York Academy of Art — graduating with honors from both the institutions.

Located in New Orleans, LA
Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes.
Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark.

Michael Tole is a figurative painter currently living in Tempe, AZ with his wife and daughters. A Texas native, most of his 20 year long career was spent in Dallas. After relocating to Tempe, his work experienced a significant shift from photo-based paintings of retail interiors to fantastical figurative inventions based on pop culture imagery he has encountered via his two daughters’ taste in music videos, and his proximity to Southern California and it’s particular brand of Disney-esque hedonism. Mr. Tole’s career includes shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Miami. His work has been reviewed in Art Forum International...
