"To Hell with Ho Chi Minn" Naive, Folk Painting by Self-Taught Artist
Located in Wellesley, MA
"To Hell with Ho Chi Minn," Folk/Naive Painting, Acrylic on Board with Artist's Painted Wood Frame, 24 x 17 Inches, by Self-Taught artist Elias Telles. Telles is a Vietnam vet who unfortunately suffered from undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder, who took up painting as a way of dealing with his condition. This painting is a particularly poignant and whimsical abstraction inspired by Tellles's memories of the war. Fifteen years ago, Elias Telles woke from a dream in which an angel holding a lit candle was descending a staircase. The next morning he tore some wood from a dilapidated fence and started painting angels. Elias had already led an adventurous existence before becoming a self-taught painter. Born into a family of 14 siblings in East Los Angeles, he joined the Marine Corps upon graduation from high school and served two years in Vietnam as a rifleman. It wasn’t until he was in his late ‘40s that he started to paint. At a local flea market one of his early works caught the attention of a set designer who placed it in a Steve Martin movie and from there his reputation grew: paintings subsequently appeared in a number of other productions which created a Hollywood following and his collectors now include several film directors, work is included in the permanent collection of The House of Blues, and he was one of the featured artists on the PBS series ‘Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations.’ An ex-marine, Telles lives quietly in California without a computer or a cell phone. His tastes lean towards American history and early blues and country music, subjects that frequently appear in his paintings. Soldiers, skeletons and honky-tonk men populate his paintings as do cultural and historical figures such as early minstrel show entertainer Gus Cannon, a ghoulishly-rendered Hank Williams, and the revered Alabama folk artist Bill Traylor...

Outsider Folk Art Expressionist Rabbi Israeli Painting Signed Hebrew Jewish Star
Located in Surfside, FL
This is a signed portrait painting done in an outsider, folk art, expressionist style. it is signed in Hebrew, also marked with a Jewish star. this is from a collection of works by the same hand. they are all signed. Some have markings to the back of the paper. they have some age to them. They bear similarities to artists as dissimilar as Moshe Tamir, Mane Katz and an Israeli version of Purvis Young. In this piece the artist choice of colors is muted yet powerful. Israel has had a Vibrant Folk Art, Naive art scene for a long time now, artists like Yisrael Paldi, Nahum Guttman, Reuven Rubin and even Yefim Ladyzhensky had naive periods. The most well know of the strict naive artists are Shalom of Safed, Irene Awret, Gabriel Cohen, Natan Heber, Michael Falk and Kopel Gurwin. Naïve art is any form of visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). Unlike folk art, naïve art does not necessarily evince a distinct cultural context or tradition. Naïve art is recognized, and often imitated, for its childlike simplicity and frankness. Paintings of this kind typically have a flat rendering style with a rudimentary expression of perspective. One particularly influential painter of "naïve art" was Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French Post-Impressionist who was discovered by Pablo Picasso. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. Museums devoted to naïve art now exist in Kecskemét, Hungary; Riga, Latvia; Jaen, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brasil; Vicq France and Paris. "Primitive art" is another term often applied to art by those without formal training, but is historically more often applied to work from certain cultures that have been judged socially or technologically "primitive" by Western academia, such as Native American, sub saharan African or Pacific Island art (see Tribal art). This is distinguished from the self-conscious, "primitive" inspired movement primitivism. Another term related to (but not completely synonymous with) naïve art is folk art. There also exist the terms "naïvism" and "primitivism" which are usually applied to professional painters working in the style of naïve art (like Paul Gauguin, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee). At all events, naive art can be regarded as having occupied an "official" position in the annals of twentieth-century art since - at the very latest - the publication of the Der Blaue Reiter, an almanac in 1912. Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, who brought out the almanac, presented 6 reproductions of paintings by le Douanier' Rousseau (Henri Rousseau), comparing them with other pictorial examples. However, most experts agree that the year that naive art was "discovered" was 1885, when the painter Paul Signac became aware of the talents of Henri Rousseau and set about organizing exhibitions of his work in a number of prestigious galleries. The Earth Group (Grupa Zemlja) were Croatian artists, architects and intellectuals active in Zagreb from 1929 to 1935. The group included the painters Krsto Hegedušić, Edo Kovačević, Omer Mujadžić, Kamilo Ružička, Ivan Tabaković, and Oton Postružnik, the sculptors Antun Augustinčić, Frano Kršinić, and the architect Drago Ibler. Art brut, primitive art, primitive, art naïf, naïve art. Outsider art. A term applied to Yugoslav (Croatian) naive painters working in or around the village of Hlebine, near the Hungarian border, from about 1930. Some of the best known naive artists are Dragan Gaži, Ivan Generalić, Josip Generalić, Krsto Hegedušić, Mijo Kovačić, Ivan Lacković-Croata, Franjo Mraz, Ivan Večenaj and Mirko Virius. Camille Bombois (1883–1970) Ferdinand Cheval, known as 'le facteur Cheval' (1836–1924) Henry Darger (1892–1973) L. S. "Andes Mountains Peru South America, " Joseph Yoakum, Black Folk Art Landscape
By Joseph Yoakum
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Yoakum Andes Mountains Peru So America, circa 1960s Colored pencil and ballpoint pen on paper 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches Provenance: Karen Lennox Gallery, Chicago Private Collection, South Dakota Yoakum began drawing in the early 1960s. Most of his work consists of radiantly colored landscapes with mountains, water, trees, and winding roads in abstract and complex configurations. his period of greatest activity — 1965 to 1970 — when he usually made one drawing a day. Yoakum maintained he had seen all the places represented in his drawings, a statement that may not be true in some instances. He traveled a great deal, beginning in his early teens when he ran away from home and became a circus handyman. Yoakum’s drawings can be considered memory images growing out of either actual or imagined experiences. All of his drawings have titles that grew longer and more specific over the years. He dated his works with a rubber stamp — an oddly impersonal, labor-saving device. Although Joseph Yoakum gave vastly different accounts of his background, he was, throughout his life, classified as an African American. Sometimes Yoakum claimed that he was a full-blooded “Nava-joe” Indian, one of twelve or thirteen children born to a farmer on an Indian reservation in Window Rock, Arizona. At other times he insisted that he was of African-American descent. He described his mother as a strong woman who was a doctor and knowledgeable in the use of herbal medicines. Yoakum’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, during his early childhood. His father was employed briefly in the railroad yards prior to settling permanently on a farm in nearby Walnut Grove...

Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan, Ex-Voto, Retablo, Painting on Metal, Mexico
Located in Houston, TX
This retablo was purchased by the gallery in Mexico City. I knew the family that sold the retablo to me. It is dated 1853 because the story on the retablo was passed down for generations and a relative of Lourdes painted it in her memory. The description on the ex-voto reads: "Thanks to the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos that I have a new job with my new bosses. That they like my food and they don't mind what I prepare for them. " It is in excellent condition. It is framed behind conservatorship glass. The framed size is 14" x 15". The class should only be cleaned with ammonia free cleaner. An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or to a divinity; the term is usually restricted to Christian examples. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshiper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols such as a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed body part, or a directly related item such as a crutch given by a person formerly lame. There are places where a very old tradition of depositing ex-votos existed, such as Abydos in ancient Egypt. Especially in the Latin world, there is a tradition of votive paintings...

Israeli Folk Art Bright Colorful Naive Jerusalem Vibrant Landscape Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
My life as an artist started in 1976 when I left Kishinev (Bessarabia) for Israel. In my youth I did not have the opportunity to study an regularly, although I learned painting during some two years at the Belle-Arts Academy in Kishinev and one year in Bucarest. My youth was spent during world war 2 when Bessarabia was annexed by the Soviet Union, years of hunger and the need to work very hard to be able to survive. I worked as a retoucher of photographs in a studio. When I arrived in Israeli went to live in Jerusalem and took up painting as my only ocupation, not as in Russia where it was one of my occupations which I had to do sometimes in hiding, stealong time from my everyday jobs. Israel, its colourings, impressed me much: the blue of the sky, the turquoise of the sea, the palette of desert colours. The stones of Israel looked alive and I wished I could paint them all. In 19761 started to expose my work. Since then I participated in a number of exhibitions in groups and alone. Since 1984 I am a member of the Israeli Union of Painters and Sculptors. The last exhibition where I took part was at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris together in a group of Jerusalem artists. Israel has had a Vibrant Folk Art, Naive art scene for a long time now artists like Yisrael Paldi, Nahum Guttman...

Located in Buffalo, NY
An original acrylic on canvas by American artist Richard Huntington entitled "Model Shoots Artist". This new work is part of the current gallery exhibition, A Sense of Place which runs through the end of June. This special exhibition is a celebration of the work of 4 extraordinary artists who used to call Western New York home. Travel lust, adventure, and livelihood have taken each of these artists to distant places, including China, Mexico, Massachusetts, and New York City, but they will always be a treasured part of Buffalo's dynamic arts community. Acknowledging that a sense of place can be an element in any work of art, shaping or transforming it depending on intentions and explorations, Resource:Art is thrilled to present this selection of new work by each of these unique artists. Richard Huntington is a writer, printmaker, and painter who lives in Buffalo, N.Y. and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Born in Albany, N.Y., Huntington received a BFA from Syracuse University in 1959 and an MFA in 1963 from the University at Buffalo, where he studied under Seymour Drumlevitch. He taught studio and art history courses at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.; lived and worked in New York City, where he showed at the Fulton Street Gallery and other venues; was an art critic for the Buffalo Courier...
