During his over four decades as the preeminent illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post, Joseph Christian Leyendecker's clever illustrations were eagerly anticipated by enthusiastic readership across the country, and none more so than his holiday designs. One of Leyendecker's most celebrated creations was his groundbreaking idea of the New Year's Baby. Originally portrayed as a fleshy sweet-faced child complete with tiny angel wings, the New Year's Baby gradually morphed into a worldly tot acutely aware of the social and political issues facing the nation at the time. In fact, Leyendecker's final Post cover illustration was the 1943 New Year's Baby.
Following the success of these Post covers, the artist was hired to create advertisements for the American Oil Company (AMOCO). Throughout the 1940s and through the final years of his life, Leyendecker produced ads incorporating his famed New Year's Baby into AMOCO advertisements, as in the present work, Happy Landing...

Herbert Paus was a native of Minneapolis and got his first job as a cartoonist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Ambitious to become an illustrator, he enrolled in the Fine Arts School there, and later found employment in a Chicago art studio.
Eventually, he moved to New York where he became a freelance illustrator. Paus had a strong sense of design, which was ideally suited to posters. He was a member of the Government’s committee on pictorial publicity during World War I, and painted many effective posters to support the war effort. This approach, combined with a striking use of vivid color, was carried over into his magazine illustrations and cover designs for such magazines as Woman’s Home Companion, American Magazine, The Youth’s Companion, and Collier’s.
Among his many outstanding book illustrations were those for Maurice Maeterlinck’s play “Betrothal” as told for children entitled Tyltyl.
Paus also painted for such advertisers as Hart, Schaffner & Marx, Goodyear, General Motors, Certain-teed, and Victor Records...

Both George Brehm and his younger brother Worth, had the ability to illustrate stories about children, particularly boys, sympathetically and convincingly. Perhaps this insight developed from their small-town Hoosier upbringing.
George studied at the Art Students League in New York with Twachtman, DuMond, and Bridgman, but did his first illustration for the Reader’s Magazine, published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company near his home in Indianapolis. " Gentleness and oriental wisdom follow the supercharged bubbling to which we were accustomed from the previous deliberately art brut exhibition by Mohammad ARIYAEI. The Iranian painter's imagination moves serenely from the wildest frenzy to the meditative calm of great, fabulous stories. The artist then took pleasure in pouring the volcanic torrent of his barbaric figures onto the delicate latticework with which he is accustomed to lining his backgrounds with the patience of an illuminating monk. Already sweetness and paroxysm coexisted. Now gentleness wins. The trained imagination of the painter, yet spontaneously bubbling, by instinct as much as by erudition, has no difficulty in reconnecting with the abundant oriental tradition of the thousand and one nights, which, like a long underground river, resurfaces at the light of his painting.
