About the Item

On offer is a striking portrait, a late 19th-century reproduction by an unknown artist of what is widely considered to be an authentic self-portrait of Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660). Like the original, the work captures the artist in the same pose and garments with an intense gaze directed at the viewer rendered in the style of the Old Master—but perhaps with just a touch more swagger. Of Velázquez’s approximately 110 to 120 known works, primarily portraits of King Philip IV and the Spanish royal family, only five are classified as self-portraits. And you would need to visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to see the original, whereas this one could take pride of place at home. Signature: Not discernable. Unframed image: 32.25" w x 41" h.
