Gilbert Ledward - 1930s Watercolour Design for a Decorative Sculptural Frieze
Located in London, GB
GILBERT LEDWARD, RA, PRBS
(1888-1960)
Tennis, Golf, Shooting, Ice-Skating, Dreaming – Proposed Design for Decorative Frieze in the Italian Drawing Room at Eltham Palace, commissioned by Stephen Courtauld
Signed and dated July 9th 1933
Watercolour and pencil
12.5 by 49.5 cm., 5 by 19 ½ in.
(frame size 36 by 67 cm., 14 ¼ by 26 ¼ in.)
Exhibited:
The artist’s daughter;
London, The Fine Art Society, A Centenary Tribute, Feb 1988, no. 43.
Gilbert Ledward was born in London. He was educated at St Mark’s College, Chelsea. In 1905 he entered the Royal College of Art to study sculpture under Edouard Lanteri and in 1910 he entered the Royal Academy Schools. In 1913 he won the Prix de Rome for sculpture, the Royal Academy’s travelling award and gold medal, which allowed him to travel in Italy until the outbreak of the Wold War I. During the war he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was appointed as an official war artist in 1918.
Following the war he was largely occupied as a sculptor of war memorials including the Guards Division memorial in St James’s Park and the Household Division’s memorial in Horse Guards Parade. In 1934, supported by Eric Gill and Edwin Lutyens, he established a company called Sculptured Memorials and Headstones, which promoted better design of memorials in English churchyards. His war memorials after World War II include one in Westminster Abbey to the Submarine Service, Commandos and Airborne Forces.
Ledward was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1927-1929) and in 1937 was elected at Royal Academician. He became President of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a trustee of the Royal Academy.
The present work is a design for an intended decorative frieze for the Italian Drawing Room of Eltham Palace. In 1935 the remains of the medieval royal palace of Eltham was rescued from decay by Stephen and Virginia Courtald who built an ultra modern Art Deco house to adjoin the existing Great Hall. They employed the architects John Seeley and Paul Edward Paget and the fashionable Mayfair interior designer the Marchese Peter Malacrida to design the strikingly glamorous 1930s interiors of the new house. The dramatic entrance hall was created by the Swedish designer Rolf Engstromer...

BIO
Sybil Andrews was a printmaker, painter, graphic artist and educator who was born in Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England. She moved to London (England) in 1922. In 1947, she emigrated to Campbell River (Vancouver Island) British Columbia, Canada, where she worked, taught and lived for the rest of her life. She died at a hospital in Victoria (B.C.)
Her mediums were the colour linocut (1) (most famous), etching, posters, pastels, ink, watercolour, monoprint and oil. Her subjects were human activity (at work, sports, travel, etc.), figures, animals, genre, allegory, architecture and landscape. Her style was Art Deco (see AskART styles), Futurism, Cubism and Vorticism (2). Her work is identified by a simple format, clean lines, distortion, vivid colours, drama and rhythm.
Quote: "The colour linocut was just the medium for me, being interested in dynamics and ideas and patterns... It is impossible to be fussy with lines, you have to simplify, you are forced to simplify your idea to its fundamentals." Andrews produced 76 linocuts in her life, of which 43 were made from 1929 to 1939, which is considered to be her best period.
John Hassall's art correspondence course (1918) was the beginning of her formal art education. She went from there to Heatherley's School of Fine Art (London/1922) where she studied under Henry Massey (see AskART) and met artistic partner Cyril Power (see AskART). At the same time, she studied independently with sculptor Henri Glicenstein (see AskART) who taught her drypoint etching and to draw from life.
She also attended the Grosvenor School of Modern Art (1925). Iain McNab (1890-1967) was Principal and Claude Flight (3) (see AskART) an instructor who had a great influence on her choice of linocut as a primary medium. Some of his other students and her associates were Edith Lawrence (1890-1973), Lill Tschudi (1911-2001), Eileen Mayo (see AskART) and William Greengrass...

Joseph Jacinto Mora 1876 – 1947
Mora was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and was the son of Domingo Mora, a well-known painter and sculptor who brought his family to the United States in the mid 1890s and then became a teacher in New York at the Art Students League. Joseph and his artist brother Luis Mora (1874-1940) grew up being much influenced by the creative atmosphere of their father’s studio. In 1904, he returned to Arizona and New Mexico and lived with Hopi and Navajo tribes, learning their languages and painting depictions of their ceremonies, especially the Kachina ceremonial dances. One of the results of his Western travels was a series of humorous maps that were spoofs of the national parks and that were made into posters. In the 1930s, the maps sold for 25 cents each and were distributed through souvenir shops at the parks. He also painted a watercolor series, “Horsemen of the West” and wrote two books, “Trail Dust and Saddle Leather” and “Californios.” Joseph Mora died in Pebble Beach on October 10, 1947. Devoting his life to exploration of subjects as diverse as vaqueros, Hopi Kachina figures, the Arizona landscape, and California missions, Joseph Mora also excelled as a writer, photographer, designer, children’s book illustrator, and map maker.
“Apart from the bread and butter commissions that he referred to as “pot-boilers,” Mora has left a vast legacy of fine artwork. His contributions to public sculpture and architectural decorations, which are numerous and diverse, gaze calmly at the world from buildings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salinas, San Jose and Portland. Mora’s dioramas and large-scale figures are permanently in Monterey and Sacramento, California and Claremore and Bartlesville, Oklahoma. His drawings, paintings and photographs are cherished in private collections and private institutions across the country and first editions of his books are highly valued. But in the final analysis, Mora’s most important works may be his cartes.
In these entertaining maps, Mora combined his encyclopedic knowledge of history, his writing, drawing, and cartooning skills, his fine sense of design, and his sense of playfulness to create an art form uniquely his own. Mora’s cartes are still captivating more than fifty years after their completion, and they exemplify the popular, entertaining, direct, and informative art at which Mora excelled.”

A Corner of Barbados

Joseph Stella(1877-1946)
A Corner of Barbados, 1937
Oil on canvas, 11 x 15 inches (27.9 x 38.1 cm)
Inscribed on verso: A corner of / Barbados / O:P by / Joseph Stella
Provenance
The artist;
By bequest to his nephew, Sergio Stella, 1946;
By descent in the family, until the present
Joseph Stella’s artistic career defies easy categorization. He was simultaneously a modernist and traditionalist, a dual citizen of the Old and New World, a bold experimenter and masterful practitioner of time-honored artistic techniques. His iconic paintings of New York City, such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island, celebrate modernity and the Machine Age, while his exuberant paintings of the natural world speak to the spiritual revelation that guided and grounded him throughout his life. Until recently, the divergent aspects of Stella’s career “confounded his legacy.” But in Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature, the multi-venue museum exhibition that focuses on the artist’s lifelong engagement with nature, a more complete and nuanced understanding of his career has emerged.
Stella’s work of flora and fauna demonstrate his deep connection to and close observational study of nature to invigorate his creativity and sustain his human spirit. Indeed, nature was a salve to his woes about life and the modern age. He made countless drawings and paintings of flowers, many of which were done at the New York Botanical Garden – a favorite place for the artist. In these works, Stella explored new styles and pressed the limits of his imagination. Like nature itself, he was always changing, always growing.
Stella found himself in Barbados in 1937, when then health of his wife had declined and she asked him to bring her home. He loved the island paradise, as it reawakened his creativity and love the natural world, much as his returns to Italy did. Although he remained in Barbados for only five months, the landscape he absorbed and the motifs he developed fueled his art for the next three years. The Barbados paintings...

MODERNIST DRAWING New Hope Mid-Century WPA Abstract Non-Objective Jazz Modern
Located in New York, NY
MODERNIST DRAWING New Hope Mid-Century WPA Abstract Non-Objective Jazz Modern. Signed with a "Ramstonev" stamp lower right.
RAMSTONEV Cooperative Art Project (1937-1939). In the late 1930s, Charles Ramsey became close friends with Charles Evans and Louis Stone. He persuaded them to join him teaching his New Hope summer classes in non-objective painting. Soon, a history-making collaboration began. In 1937, meeting in Evans' studio at the rear of Cryer's Hardware store on Main Street in New Hope, a decision was made to establish the Co-Operative Painting Project. They were intrigued by the cooperative ad-lib process by which jazz musicians created their music. Believing this to be the quintessential American contribution to music, they theorized that a similar result might be obtainable with art, a "visual jam session." This particlarly fascinated Ramsey, who was a jazz buff and had a large collection of jazz records.
The objective was to jointly collaborate in the creation of a painting as well as applying collective criticism during its creation. By creating forward movement by general consent, they believed they could produce a higher level of beauty. By consensus it was decided that subject matter would be non-objective. Up to eight people would participate and stop when the painting "felt" finished by common agreement.
These co-operative works were done in several different mediums- the majority in pastel, but some in watercolor, gouache, graphite or cut paper collage. On occasion, the group would create a series, as opposed to a single work, created in steps by three or four artists. One of the occasional participants was famed New Hope poet, Stanley Kunitz. These series could range in number from four to sixteen paintings in each. The first of a series would be very basic and the last a fully finished work.
In the scope of importance among the New Hope Modernist...
