About the Item

From The Jon Gould Collection of Andy Warhol Photographs This work is not signed by the artist, however, each photo is unique and blind embossed “Andy Warhol” in the lower right corner (pictured). This item has not been officially stamped by The Andy Warhol Foundation because of its unique provenance. Jon Gould was arguably the love of Andy Warhol's life. During the course of their romantic relationship, Warhol gifted many photo prints directly to Gould. Jon Gould passed away from AIDS in 1986 and all of the photographs were willed to his twin brother, Jay Gould. Until this year, all these photographs have remained in storage and are in excellent condition. Provenance: Gift of the Artist to Jon Gould, by descent to Jay Gould This photo matches a negative and contact sheet of Warhol photography gifted by The Andy Warhol Foundation and held by The Cantor Museum at Stanford University. (Images can be provided upon request) Surely the most photographed subject of Andy Warhol’s art-making career, Jon Gould was born in Massachusetts to an East Coast establishment family with lineage back to the Mayflower and is best known as a Paramount Pictures film executive and the final boyfriend in Andy Warhol’s life. Jon Gould had an idyllic upbringing with a superlative education and connections. Fresh out of Harvard Radcliffe Institute, Gould moved to New York City where he first worked for Rolling Stone magazine, following which he moved to Los Angeles, where his career took off as a film production executive for Paramount Pictures. During his brief but meteoric rise at Paramount Pictures, Gould was part of the studio’s golden period when it produced films like Flashdance and Urban Cowboy. In 1980, Gould was introduced to Andy Warhol, who had recently parted with his longtime lover, Jed Johnson, coincidentally another twin with a brother named Jay. At that time, Warhol exclaimed, “I just have to be in love now or I’ll go crazy.” Warhol’s obsession with Gould was instantaneous. As Bob Colacello penned, in Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up, "Old money, Harvard, Hollywood it was a résumé that Andy couldn't resist.” Gould and Warhol made for a formidable duo navigating the worlds of art and celebrity between New York, Los Angeles, Aspen, and Montauk along with travels to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Palm Beach. Jon Gould was incredibly handsome, masculine and easily passed as a straight man, all of which Warhol found very attractive. In The Andy Warhol Diaries, Warhol says, “I love going out with Jon because it’s like being on a real date- he’s tall and strong and I feel that he can take care of me. And it’s exciting because he acts straight so I’m sure people think he is.” Gould’s looks and background seemingly offered Warhol access to a world from which he always felt excluded. Gould also became somewhat of a collector himself, through Warhol’s largesse and his friendship with other artists. Warhol photographed Gould constantly when they were together and created a painting of him in 1981. Likewise, Jean-Michel Basquiat painted Gould in 1985 while Keith Haring dedicated a New Year’s painting to Gould. Indeed, Gould inspired many of those who today we find most inspiring. The Jon Gould Collection of Andy Warhol Photographs includes hundreds of unique silver gelatin prints gifted by Warhol to Gould during their relationship. Upon Jon Gould’s death in 1986 at the age of 33 from complications of AIDS, the Collection passed to his family from whom the works are now available exclusively through Hedges Projects. The Jon Gould Collection of Andy Warhol Photographs features scores of heroic portraits of Gould along with other notable subjects such as Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger, and Robert Rauschenberg. The works in this collection depict events and activities from The Andy Warhol Diaries (Editor Pat Hackett) and the Netflix series of the same name. They are also found in The Andy Warhol Photography Archive at The Cantor Arts Center of Stanford University. The combination of Warhol’s Diaries and the Photo Archive enables scholars, students, curators and collectors to research and contextualize these works in a singular manner providing insight into the artist and his subjects unlike any other medium. Woman in Chaps, The Hamptons Classic, Bridgehampton, NY, 2008
By Robin Rice
Located in Hudson, NY
Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition 3 of 10 After 30 years on West 11th Street, The Robin Rice Gallery celebrates its first ever exhibition for Robin Rice. For decades, Robin has exhibited a wide variety of photographers at the gallery but never her own work. As the show’s title denotes, “It’s About Time.” The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibit runs through March 17, 2019. While her photography spans five decades and multiple continents, Rice maintains a cohesive, candid voice that carries throughout all of her work. Observing the world around her in a cinematic way, she possesses an uncanny ability to recognize and capture moments of beauty and the spontaneity of the human spirit. By evoking a wonderstruck sensibility, Rice expresses a deep-rooted love for both people and landscapes using her distinct bohemian style. In this salon-style retrospective, Rice uses an “old school” approach and shoots with her Nikon on Tri-X film. When creating her art, she insists, “the camera has a mind of its own.” The scenes captured in her photography are unedited and thus born purely from the magic of the in-camera composition. In the invitational image, “Tree Farm, Long Lane, East Hampton, NY”, 1999, a naked woman wearing nothing but a large straw hat is captured from behind, centered between a long line of trees on either side, as she bikes down the lane. In another image, “Bubbles, Piazza Rondanini, Roma”, 1995, friends linger before a vine-covered building, extending their arms up in joyful wonder, catching bubbles descending from above. Receiving her first camera at the age of 11, she has since been an avid fine art photographer. After moving from Philadelphia to New York in 1976, Rice was immediately swept up in the electrifying, fast-paced art world of the city. In 1977, Discoworld Magazine hired her to photograph the opening night of Studio 54. After enjoying 23 years of success as a commercial photographer, she shifted her career to become a gallerist, opening The Robin Rice Gallery in 1990. Curating 175 shows, Robin developed her own “school” of artists, cultivating a keen eye for curating and in doing so enriching the aesthetic of her own fine art photography. Despite devoting much of her energy to the gallery, Rice has never stopped creating her own art, and has exhibited in several galleries nationally and abroad. Influenced by photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who curated the art of others and exhibited his own work, Rice is ready to showcase her photography on her own turf. In her spare time, Robin has recently taken up DJing: you can often find DJ Redshoes spinning vinyl at her loft in Beacon. Chaps, Leather chaps...
