Throughout my years of working on ranches, I’ve met a handful of cowboys who also like me, had a past life of their own. A handful of them shared with me that they grew up surfing either on the East or West coast and still try to catch a wave on their limited vacations or time off when they can make the trek. I always thought it was such a unique comparison to having a cowboy who spends his days in the saddle, lives among the land, breathes in dust all day long, yet has a fascination and hobby in surfing. I knew eventually this was a concept I wanted to create with them in mind. Fortunately for me, I met just the perfect cowboy who rodeos at Cal Poly, not far from Morro Bay and Pismo Beach, who also surfs the miles of surfline alongside Highway 1 in California. Before meeting up at Morro Rock, I spoke with him on the phone to plan out the entire concept. We met just before golden hour in the late afternoon sunlight, where we found the exact spot we would set up at. As he mounted his horse, I handed him a beautiful vintage surfboard to hold while he shifted his horse and began looking at the distant waves that crashed along the rocky shore. The light breeze blew through the horse's mane, and the ocean mist and fine beach sand created an atmospheric haze in the distance, adding another beautiful element to this scene. This photograph is dedicated not just to the surf culture but also to the cowboys and ranchers who ride along the hillsides and valleys on horseback in their full-time work, yet find any excuse to get pitted at the nearest ocean break in their time off.

Beau Simmons has been a professional photographer since 2009. He grew up just outside Joshua Tree National Park, CA. He made a name for himself at 21 in the fashion photography industry working with clients including Marc Jacobs, 7 For All Mankind, Guess Jeans, and Converse. He was a go-to photographer for such agencies as Elite Models, IMG, and Ford Models. The fashion scene began to grind on Beau. Being a cowboy is in his blood. In this spirit, he decided to pursue his love for the western lifestyle and the wonder of the American landscape. Beau captures his artwork exclusively on film using the lost art of medium and large format film photography. Taking inspiration from masters of film photography like Kurt Marcus and Steven Shore, Beau finds passion in capturing some of the forgotten lifestyles of our time. By telling a story influenced by cowboys and the western culture, his body of work focuses on preserving authentic moments and documenting what might be referred to as a lost era in today’s society. His body of work is a collection of memories captured predominantly throughout North America. His commitment to telling an authentic story also includes working with American veterans and is on full display in his first feature coffee table book, The Twenty-Year War, that he created with two combat veterans, one of whom is his childhood friend. Beau is based in North Carolina but can usually be found traveling the United States, working on various ranches while capturing the western lifestyle.
