BLANC series by Ben Cope:
Ben Cope is a Los Angeles based portrait artist with a BFA in ceramic sculpture and photography from Columbus State University. He is known for his celebrity and fashion portraiture which has been published internationally in various publications from Harper’s Bazaar to l’Officiel.
Mirroring his portrait work, Ben Cope’s studio explorations are all about identity with an added sculptural focus. In the series BLANC, Ben focuses on the covering up, or striping away, of identity through the bare-bones medium of flat white paint. There is a hands-on, textural emphasis on the simplistic beauty of the human form paired delicately with floral motifs. The white texture brings to mind ceramic slip - the basic building block of the medium.
Fascinated with the idea of white-washing and renewal, he invites his subjects to submerse themselves in the same flat white paint used day after day to refresh the cyc wall in his photography studio. The submersion becomes a transformative process for the subjects and the photographer himself as they explore together the notion of erasing marks of the past and preparing a new canvas - physically and emotionally.
Ben Cope is a Georgia native graduating from Columbus State University with a BFA in ceramic sculpture and photography. After receiving his degree he moved to the west coast to pursue a career in the photo industry. Currently Ben resides in Los Angeles focusing on fashion and fine art photography.
Ben Cope deconstructs photographs of the human form. By stripping the body of personal identity, particularly gender, he creates images where the figure is solely reliant on the surface of the photo paper to remain relevant. The texture of the photos remains heavy while the body moves with ease in the background.

Ben Cope
Ben Cope is a Los Angeles based portrait artist with a BFA in ceramic sculpture and photography from Columbus State University. He maintains a successful career with a diverse portfolio including fashion, editorial, celebrity portraiture and advertising. He is widely known for his celebrity and fashion portraiture, which has been published internationally in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, GQ, The Work Magazine, Fucking Young, and l’Officiel, and has shot international campaigns for such clients as Adidas, L’Oréal, Paul Mitchell, and Vidal Sassoon. He has photographed Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, David Lynch, Alex Rodriguez, RuPaul, Chris Brown, Snoop Dogg, and Moby, among others.
