About the Item

Pioneers of French photography, the Bisson brothers (Louis-Auguste Bisson and Auguste-Rosalie Bisson) photographed a series of architectural images in Europe in the early 1860s. This incredible warm-hued albumen print is one such example from the series and features the Pavillion Turgot at the Palais du Louvre, a former royal palace in Paris that is now mostly occupied by the Musee de Louvre. The Pavillion Turgot resides within the Pavillon de la Bibliothèque on the northern end of the Louvre, which is made up of several wings and pavillions. Now referred to as the Richelieu wing, Pavillion Turgot is one of three pavillions that can be found on court side (inside) of the Palace. 'Palais du Louvre, Pavillion Turgot' is an excellent example of the Bisson brothers snapshot style of photography, which defied the posed photographic techniques that were made popular in the mid-19th century by the daguerreotype. Printed on semi-gloss paper and mounted on original paper, the print features a blindstamp photographers' monogram in red, a red facsimile signature and title in pencil and a stamped photographer’s credit on the mount. This print was previously in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and another print of this image currently resides in the Museum’s collection. Warm hued image on semi-gloss paper trimmed to edge, mounted on original paper. The mount with bumped corners and light foxing in places, consistent with age. Please note this work is sold with a custom-made mat.
