A documentary portrait of Helen Frankenthaler (1925-2011) in her studio in New York in the 1950s. Frankenthaler who has remained a major American woman artist and female force of nature in the history of 20th century art is here, an abstract painter busy at work in her West End Avenue studio in New York City. Photographer Burt Glinn captures the celebrated artist, Frankenthaler in slippers - materials in hand while in the process of "staining" pigment onto canvas. Helen Frankenthaler in the studio is a gelatin silver estate print, 20” x 16,”signed and stamped, signed by the Glinn estate on photo back. Provenance: Glinn estate *** Artist’s Bio: Born 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, photographer Burt Glinn worked for LIFE magazine before joining Magnum photo agency. He photographed personalities throughout the 1950s and 60s, continuing to work commercially and editorially for more than five decades in the US and abroad on assignment, until his death in 2008. The artist photographed revolutionary leader Fidel Castro entrance into Havana, Cuba, celebrity and art luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Helen Frankenthaler. Subject matter included the social scene of the rich, the dirtiness of politics, and the humorous. Glinn received numerous awards for his editorial and commercial photography.
