Jannis Kounellis (1936 – 2017) was a Greek painter and sculptor. He anticipated and fostered the development of the Arte Povera movement. From the 1980s, his artworks often retrieved fragments and ancient objects, evoking nostalgia for an archaic and symbolical-mythological world. Worthy of mention are his exhibitions at the Venice Biennial, at the Kunsthalle of Hamburg and at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam.
