“When I stepped out onto the veranda that connected to the adjoining bedroom, in front of me was a forest of buildings as far as I could see. Right underneath, a subway train of the Ginza Line was rumbling out from the tunnel, only to disappear again into the belly of the Tokyo Building. In the foreground on the right-hand side, the dome of the planetarium on the rooftop of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, which no longer exists, was glittering silver. It was a time when I was spending most of my days with a hangover from the previous night’s drinking spree with my friends. Such were the circumstances that this photograph was produced in.”—Daido Moriyama

Inspired by the likes of Eugène Atget, Weegee, and William Klein, photographer Daido Moriyama has made the city his muse. In Tokyo and other cosmopolitan locales, he documents cultural change and urban chaos in an expressive style all his own. Moriyama was a founder of Japan’s Provoke movement; from 1969 to 1970, the group published an avant-garde magazine that artfully documented the dramatic transformation of 1960s post-war Japan.
Moriyama has focused on elements of modernization, the dissolution of traditional Japanese values, and the American military occupation of the country. Typically, the photographer makes grainy, black-and-white, high-contrast images, which he prints himself. He has largely shot with a small handheld automatic camera, rarely with attention to the viewfinder.
Moriyama’s work has been acquired for the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Centre Pompidou, among other institutions.

Daido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) is a renowned Japanese photographer celebrated for his raw, grainy, and high-contrast black-and-white images that capture the gritty, chaotic energy of post-war urban life in Japan. Born in Osaka, Moriyama began his career as a graphic designer before turning to photography in the 1960s, influenced by the avant-garde Provoke movement, which sought to challenge traditional notions of photography with an expressive, unpolished style. Moriyama's work often focuses on the darker side of city life, portraying fleeting moments of alienation, desire, and transience in Tokyo’s streets. His iconic series, Farewell Photography (1972), and his book Shashin yo Sayonara, pushed the boundaries of photographic convention, using blurred, out-of-focus images to evoke the fragmented nature of memory and modern existence. His career has spanned over six decades, and he remains a vital figure in contemporary photography, inspiring generations with his provocative and innovative approach to capturing urban reality.

Nicholas Taylor (American, b. 1953) is a renowned photographer and musician. Taylor moved to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a photographer and it was through the vibrant New York art scene that he came to know the young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was, in fact, his intimate portfolio of photographs documenting his friendship with Basquiat that rocketed Taylor to fame. The two would collaborate in the No Wave band “Gray” before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping. His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat."
Circa 1981, Basquiat payed homage to Taylor by incorporating "Nick Taylor" and "DJ High Priest" (a title anointed him by Basquiat) into two separate drawings. While everyone else in the downtown tries to take credit, it was in fact Taylor who first introduced Jean-Michel to Madonna - at the Mudd Club - the very place this one of a kind image was captured.
