About the Item

"Selection matters. Selection matters even more when you’re making a choice for life. Among bald eagles, till death do us part holds true. Only in the event of a partner's passing—or a rare separation—will they seek out another mate. As with any relationship, courtship between these animals can take wild twists and turns. Sometimes, quite literally. Bald eagles perform what's known as a cartwheel flight: the pair ascends into the sky, entangles their talons, and dives toward the earth together. They release their grip at the very last moment—a trust fall with life-or-death stakes. While many of the birds live independently, breeding season brings the pair back together. Nest-building is a shared ritual that can span years. Males search for large sticks and branches and return them to the nest, where the female begins construction. As completion nears, both partners assemble the finer materials—a form of bonding as they prepare to bring their eaglet into the world. There’s an element of storytelling in any image—but when photographing wildlife, that impulse feels even stronger. Your mind reaches for meaning, drawing parallels between what you see in a species so different from your own and what you know. The elements were all there. The wing position. The raindrops falling. The imminent departure. The expressions on both faces. The finality. The kind of clarity that comes with time. It just needed a personal touch. Only one title felt right." Ed. 2/12, signed on the recto, includes black frame. Guadalupe Laiz is an international artist, photographer and explorer born and raised in Argentina. Guadalupe’s main focus for the past ten years has been an extensive body of work capturing the beauty and uniqueness of the indigenous horses of Iceland, a country that has touched her deeply and continues to visit. Her work “Horses of Iceland” has been shown in exhibitions all over the world. This photograph is from her newest series "Among the Living." For this body of work, Laiz traveled across the African continent for six years, visiting Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Batswana, Rwanda, and Uganda. Forgoing comfort often for months at a time, she returned with intimate portraits of the charismatic and fierce, yet vulnerable and endangered animals she encountered. It is impossible to look at one of her photographs and not feel her subject’s innate individuality. As part of her artistic process, she spends time with each animal up close in its natural habitat, gets to know...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Dian Fossey - the Californian zoologist who became the world’s leading authority on the mountain gorilla - left a formidable legacy when she was tragically murdered in 1985. Her resting place, high up in the rain forest, is visited regularly by those that want to pay homage to her life. Fossey’s famous book ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ chronicled her research and conservation work that helped to reduce the downward population trend in mountain gorillas, ultimately saving them from extinction. Her grave is a two and a half hour walk straight uphill from the little mountain village of Bisate on the edge of the National Park and over the years a well-trodden path has taken shape in what is otherwise a dense and fairly impenetrable rainforest. In all my times trekking through the forest in search of gorillas, I have never had the fortune to be able to use this path to access the gorillas - as quite simply it was too far from the location of any particular troop to be of use. But on this occasion during Covid 19 we were working tightly with the rangers - who advised us that the Umubano Group were near the Fossey trail. It certainly helped the trek to use the path, but far better than that, it transpired that a large Silverback from the Umubano Group - Bunyenyeri, 21 years old - was coming down the...
