This photograph, taken in 1941 in Rouen, France, depicts a foggy street scene during World War II. The street is lined with traditional half-timbered houses, which are typical of Rouen's historical architecture. In the foreground, a man in a long coat and cap walks with a downcast expression, holding an umbrella in one hand, while another man sits atop a wooden cart pulled by a horse.
The street is muddy and appears to have been recently rained on, creating a somber atmosphere. To the left, there is a restaurant with a sign reading "Jeanne d'Arc," and in the background, you can see a few other pedestrians going about their day, despite the gloomy and difficult times of war. The mist adds to the melancholy, evoking a sense of life continuing under the shadow of the ongoing conflict.
Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.

Erich Andres
Erich Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away in Hamburg 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. He was working with Leni Riefenstahl shooting the Olympic Games in 1936, war a freelance press photographer during the Spanish Civil War. After World War II he worked on reportage photography, for industrial companies and traveled and worked in the USA and Europe. In Hamburg he was known as the man with the leddars. His aim was to use them to get unusual perspectives. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
