About the Item
This black-and-white photograph from the 1950s captures the iconic, winding Lombard Street in San Francisco, USA. In the foreground, a classic Volkswagen Beetle carefully navigates the famously steep and curved road, bordered by lush gardens and meticulously maintained greenery. The surrounding architecture reflects a mix of styles, typical of the city's historic neighborhoods, with elegant residential buildings perched on each side of the street.
Lombard Street, often referred to as the "crookedest street in the world," is a renowned symbol of San Francisco's unique urban landscape and draws countless visitors with its distinctive switchbacks and scenic views. The photograph is a timeless snapshot of a quiet moment on one of the most recognizable streets in San Francisco, offering a glimpse into the city’s past charm and distinctive design.
Andres, born in 1905 in Germany, began his photography career in 1920 and was one of the pioneers to use a Leica camera. His work is featured in several prestigious museums, including the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was also a contributor to Edward Steichen's landmark exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
