About Photographer Erwin Blumenfeld (1897–1969)
Erwin Blumenfeld was a visionary photographer born in Berlin, Germany. Initially involved in Dadaist circles in the 1910s, he moved to the Netherlands and then to Paris, where he began his career in fashion photography. Fleeing the Nazis, he emigrated to New York in 1941 and became one of the most influential fashion photographers of the 20th century. Blumenfeld worked for major publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Life, and is remembered for his innovative use of double exposure, solarization, and surreal compositions. His portraits, nudes, and fashion images pushed the boundaries of commercial and artistic photography. Blumenfeld’s work is housed in major museum collections including MoMA and the V&A.

Erwin Blumenfeld
Erwin Blumenfeld (26 January 1897 – 4 July 1969) was an American Jewish photographer of German origin. Born in Berlin, in 1941 he emigrated to the United States, where he soon became a successful and well-paid fashion photographer, working as a freelancer for Harper's Bazaar, Life and American Vogue. His photographic work showed the influence of Dadaism and Surrealism; as is clear in this black and white version of a cover he produced for Vogue on January 1, 1950, featuring the model Jean Patchett.
