About the Item

Hans Namuth Rauschenberg, Carolyn Brown, circa 1960s Stamped on verso Photograph 13 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches Provenance Estate of Carolyn Brown, New York 2025. Born in Essen, Germany, Hans Namuth created his initial significant collection of photographic works in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War while on assignment for VU and LIFE. He later pursued studies in photography with Joseph Breitenbach in Paris and Alexey Brodovitch at the New School for Social Research after relocating to New York in 1941. During World War II, Namuth served with the French Foreign Legion and the U. S. Army Intelligence Service; following this, he returned to freelance photography, contributing to publications such as LIFE, Look, Time, Newsweek, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue. Concurrently, he captured portraits of artists in casual environments, with his most notable work being a series on Jackson Pollock; among the more than two hundred artists featured are Willem de Kooning, Ad Reinhardt, Joseph Cornell, and Mark Rothko. Namuth's other significant photographic series include Early American Tools, created in the 1970s focusing on eighteenth-century tools, and Guatemala: The Land, The People, a project initiated in 1949, where he periodically revisited a town in Guatemala to record its progression. Apart from his photography, Namuth also directed several films featuring artists and architects like Pollock, Josef Albers, Constantin Brancusi, Louis Kahn, and Alexander Calder. When considered alongside his still photographs, these films highlight Namuth's profound engagement with portraiture. Throughout his career, he received various accolades for his film and photography, including the Merit Award from the Film Council of Greater Boston and a Public Service Award from the U. S. Department of State.

Cy Twombly gained fame for his art that combined cultural, historical, and poetic elements—particularly those from classical antiquity—with abstract shapes and his distinctive script. Born Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr. on April 25, 1928, in Lexington, Virginia, he began his artistic journey under the guidance of Pierre Daura and Marion Junkin at Washington and Lee University. This initial training was complemented by his formative experiences at the Arts Students League of New York and Black Mountain College, where he established enduring friendships with influential figures like Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham. A pivotal moment for Twombly was his 1952 trip to Italy and North Africa with Rauschenberg, funded by a grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This journey allowed Twombly to engage deeply with the rich cultural history that would inform his future artistic endeavors, leading to the creation of significant early pieces. Twombly made his way back to Italy in 1957 and 1958, during which he presented his first solo exhibition in Italy at Galleria La Tartaruga, owned by Plinio De Martiis. In 1959, he married Luisa Tatiana...
