About the Item

A group of moss draped fir trees dance together as if they were a coven of witches weaving incantations... "When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall Jasper Goodall's photographs of dark, arboreal landscapes which convey a sense of haunting, portentous silence. The images reference notions of the Sublime in Romanticism; an experience that can invoke 'delight' in the disquiet of being outside ones' comfort zone. Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. This print can be mounted on aluminium with split batten attachment within the purchased price. Further framing options are aslo available - please enquire.

Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...

Burnt Place Twilight s Path Forest by Night Fine Art Print
Located in London, GB
"Burnt Place" - After the fire swept through, the forest was left scorched and barren. The ground is still warm and the unstirring air is thick with the scent of charred wood. Scorched, lifeless pines stand solemn and mournful in the shadows of the Burnt Place. About the Twilight's Path project: "We spend our lives surrounded by the security of possessions, relationships and roles, but our futures hold nothing so substantial; one day we must all enter into true not- knowing - into a dark, unconscious place." Baltic pine - black and white forest photography, Limited edition 2/10
By Ugne Pouwell
Located in London, GB
'Baltic pine' 2021 The pine forests of the Baltic coast are shaped by conditions that are both precise and unforgiving: sandy soil, constant wind, salt carried inland from the sea, and long seasonal extremes of light and darkness. These forces slow growth and distort form. Branches extend horizontally, twist, or break, adapting to pressure rather than symmetry. This photograph was made in Giruliai forest, Lithuania, using a large-format 4×5 film camera. The process demands stillness and time, mirroring the environment itself. Each exposure is deliberate; nothing is incidental. In Baltic landscapes, pine is not decorative. It is structural, a species that persists where others cannot. Its presence defines the rhythm of the coast and the experience of space within the forest. The image isolates this tension between endurance and fragility, movement and restraint. Rendered in black and white, the work removes seasonal colour and geographic nostalgia, allowing form, density, and light to become the primary language. The resulting image is not a description of a place, but a study of adaptation, how nature holds itself under continuous pressure. Printed as a limited edition of ten, this work belongs to an ongoing body of analogue photographs exploring northern landscapes through minimal intervention and material presence. Photographed in Lithuania, Giruliai forest using a 4x5 large format camera...
