About the Item

Gaia 19 - Whites Doves Lily Pads Landscape Black and White Diptych Photograph by Jaume Llorens Bach Gaia 19 is a 18cm x 24cm Black-and-White print on Premio Kozo 180gsm White Paper by Awagami Factory This size in a Limited Edition of 10 + 2 Artist's Proofs Crane Kalman Brighton gallery is delighted to present images from Jaume Llorens' current and ongoing body of work, 'Gaia'. The horizons blend into one another in Gaia 19. Two deep limpid pools of water share one horizon and one skyline, and represent a transitional moment that covers the earth, the sea, and the sky. Gulls are picked out in blinding white against the dark black sky in this monochrome diptych, while the pond below features one dainty lily flower that has blossomed. The natural light casts a contrasting shadow over the lily pads in the pond. The lily pads are cast in a triangular shape in the pond, leading the viewer's eye to delve deeper into the diptych... The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole. In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'. 'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023. Also available as a 38cm x 50cm print. Contact the gallery for more details. All prints produced to order and shipped unframed.

In the classical period, something was considered beautiful because it existed in nature; art was secondary. In the 18th Century, the German philosopher Johann Joachim Winckelmann argued against the idea that art imitates life, believing that qualities superior to nature are found in art, specifically, ideal beauty, and “brain-born images”. Neoclassical thought represented that art need not serve any end other than its own existence. For me, beauty is an ideal, nature is real, and art comes from the brain. I take pictures in nature, finding shifting, disparate, and beautiful landscapes. I develop my pictures of trees...
