About the Item

Gaia 58 - Black and White Lily Pads Lake Catalonia Nature Photographic Print by Jaume Llorens Bach Gaia 58 is a 18cm x 24cm Black-and-White print on Premio Kozo 180gsm White Paper by Awagami Factory This size in a Limited Edition of 10 + 2 Artist's Proofs Crane Kalman Brighton gallery is delighted to present images from Jaume Llorens' current and ongoing body of work, 'Gaia'. Earth and sky are inverted in this diptych from Jaume Llorens Bach's ongoing body of work, 'Gaia'. The lily pond, with its lily pads and flowers, reflect the trees in the bright sunlight, which stretch and writhe into the branches of the trees below. The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole. In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'. 'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023. Also available as a 38cm x 50cm print. Contact the gallery for more details. All prints produced to order and shipped unframed.

In the classical period, something was considered beautiful because it existed in nature; art was secondary. In the 18th Century, the German philosopher Johann Joachim Winckelmann argued against the idea that art imitates life, believing that qualities superior to nature are found in art, specifically, ideal beauty, and “brain-born images”. Neoclassical thought represented that art need not serve any end other than its own existence. For me, beauty is an ideal, nature is real, and art comes from the brain. I take pictures in nature, finding shifting, disparate, and beautiful landscapes. I develop my pictures of trees...
