About the Item
The Rendille are found across arid and semi-arid areas of northern Kenya and live in a harmonious arrangement with their neighbours to the south, the Samburu. It is often difficult to tell Rendille and Samburu people apart, particularly young male warriors. This is reflective of a cultural immersion which has led many Rendille adopting the language of the more dominant Samburu.
A return to Kenya. On this trip John took a different approach to lighting. Building makeshift studios from locally acquired white sheets held up by four warriors and their spears! The suffuse light allows John to capture a remarkable level of detail. His subjects calm demeanor belies the reality of harsh arid winds, extreme temperatures and dust.
John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day to day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in tradional ways of life.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a very contemporary feel.

biography
Justin Creedy Smith is a British photographer.
Having graduated with a bachelor of arts degree – including a thesis on the role of war photography as a propaganda tool – he moved to Paris in 1984. Initially working as a studio assistant, his apprenticeship in fashion and advertising photography was both intense and diverse. He rapidly started assisting on a free-lance basis the likes of Horst P. Horst and Steven Meisel.
From 1985 until 1987 he was assistant to Peter Lindbergh.
In 1987 he travelled to Japan for the first time, a voyage that had a profound impact on him. Returning to Europe in 1988 he started working for Japanese magazines...
