About the Item
Nambuele illustrates the hair craft of the Mumuhuila of southern Angola, whose women take an obsessive pride in their hairstyle. Although it may change as a girl enters different stages of life, they always compliment natural hair growth with colourful beads, shells and animal oils. Once a Mumuhuila girl gets married, the hairstyle again changes and is created using an elaborate composite of powdered rock, cow dung, wood bark and sometimes rubber pipe.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
