Stripper Performers, Atlanta, 1996 by Leonard Freed is an 11" x 14" vintage print, stamped on verso (back of photo) with Freed's copyright stamp and signed (back of photo) and hand-printed by the photographer.
Stripper Performers is a documentary photograph, a backstage scene, of dancers in a night club. The nude shot of the female dancers was taken in a dressing room with the women on a performance break. Freed captures their joking around, camaraderie, and friendship.
Throughout Freed’s career he tackled many social issues for which the photographer was known as a documentarian in the US and abroad. Freed travelled from the east coast to the Deep South notably, photographing people, places, and social movements.

Artist’s Bio:
Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York. His "Black in White America" series made him known as a documentarian, a social documentary photographer. Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards and as a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely abroad and, in the US, photographing African Americans (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement is well-known as are his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, The Kate Series, among others.

Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed was born on October 23, 1929, in Brooklyn. Although Freed's photographic career is defined by documentary photo essays, such as Black in White America, Freed traveled extensively and captured people, places and things that interested him in locations around the globe. A Magnum photographer, Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America from 1964–65, events in Israel from 1967–68 and in 1973 and the New York City police department from 1972–79, to name a few celebrated assignments. Freed’s coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, although he continued to produce photo essays on New York, Italians and many other subjects. Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 until his death on November 29, 2006, Philipstown.
