This image of Lisa Law's first two children is part of a series of photographs taken during Lisa Law's early days in Truchas, New Mexico where she and her husband, Tom Law, retreated from the city to raise their family. Law's reputation is built on photographs unique for their startling sense of intimacy and spontaneity. Her early New Mexico photographs feature intimate portraits of Dennis Hopper and Janis Joplin, and chronicle the era of the hippie migration from the west and east coasts to New Mexico, along with their cultural crossings with the traditional elders of Taos Pueblo, and communities of Truchas, El Rito, and Abiquiu and Santa Fe. Law has spent five decades capturing the shifting tides of American culture on film. Her work has been published in more than 100 books and documentaries and countless magazines from Newsweek and People to Vogue and GQ. Her award-winning documentary, ‘Flashing on the Sixties: a Tribal Document’, aired on Cinemax, The Discovery Channel and PBS, and is available on home video. Dennis Hopper described it as, "The most compelling, moving documentary on the Sixties". A collection of interviews from her documentary were published in paperback, entitled ‘Interviews with Icons’. The Smithsonian Museum of American History exhibited a show of her work in 1999 and now holds a 208-piece collection in its archives. The Bethel Woods Museum of Woodstock presented a show of 58 photographs taken at Woodstock, which is now part of their permanent collection.
