About the Item

The inimitable Marina Abramović (b. 1946) is a Serbian-born performance-artist whose pioneering work has pushed the limits of the mind and body, and the relationship between artist and audience. Using her body as both the subject and the medium, Abramović explores the physical and psychological depths of pain, exhaustion, and danger in often physically gruelling performances. Her acclaimed performances have earned her global recognition and made her one of the world's most admired artists. (We highly recommend the HBO Documentary Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present”) In "Hands as Energy Receivers," Abramović presents a composed, almost ritualistic gesture: she raises her hands above her head, palms facing outward, as if channeling or receiving an unseen force. Rendered in black and white, the image is spare yet charged, emphasizing the artist's stillness and intent. This image resonates with Abramović's broader practice. Her art often explores energy exchange, ritual, and the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical. In this image, Abramović both offers and accepts–a subtle yet powerful invocation of presence, transcendence, and the body's capacity to act as a conduit. Abramović was recently the subject of a major retrospective at the Royal Academy, London. Her work is held in major permanent collections including: the MoMA, New York; the Tate Museum, London; the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice; and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, among others. Few artists (living or dead) have influenced pop culture like Marina Abramović. Whether giving TEDTalks, training Lady Gaga, or collaborating on Givenchy couture shows, Abramović’s magnetism, singularity and widespread influence is undeniable. Questions about this piece? The Hand of the Spirit of Miss General Idea
By General Idea
Located in Toronto, Ontario
In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They with photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues such as the cult of the artist, mass media, queer identity, and consumerism. Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles. Perhaps one of the earliest of these icons is the pinching hand, or "Hand of the Spirit" which debuts around 1972 and appears frequently throughout the decade. Centered on a hand-painted background, "The Hand of the Spirit of Miss General Idea" features a vibrant crest that displays a hand with fingers curled in a mystical gesture. This print comes from "Fear Management": a set of 8 prints...
